Paul was born in Mombasa, Kenya where his parents served as missionaries. He grew up in Guthrie, Oklahoma and attended Wayland Baptist University in Texas on an athletic scholarship. After graduating from Wayland with a B. A. in History, Paul went to New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary where he earned his Master of Divinity degree. He pastored in Houston, Texas for 10 years before coming to IBC, Costa Rica in 2002.
Paul is married to Dina and they have a grown daughter, Denae, who lives in Houston, Texas. Paul is a sports enthusiasts and likes to run, play basketball, soccer, golf and anything else that is outdoors. He loves to read, especially biographies and history, and has become conversationally fluent in Spanish. Traveling and trying foods from around the world are also high on his list of things he likes.
Paul enjoys the challenge and diversity of serving the international community, although he doesn't like having to say good bye to so many wonderful people when they move to a new location. He loves living and serving in such a beautiful little country like Costa Rica. He has a passion for preaching God's word in a relevant way and seeing life change happen. He also has a heart for missions and church planting and currently serves as President of the International Baptist Convention, a fellowship of English speaking international churches around the world.
Joe Sanchez Associate Pastor
Joe Sanchez came to work as our Associate Pastor in the Summer of 2014. As a military child he grew up in various parts of the United States but attended High School and College in the state of Virginia. He graduated with a B.S degree from Virginia Tech and later with a Masters of Divinity from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in Northern California. He has various ministry experience working with youth, college students, Spanish ministry and church planting.
He and his wife Lizette were married in 2004 and have two children. Lizette is Peruvian and both she and Joe are bilingual in English and Spanish. Most of their time together has been spent living in the USA within the states of Colorado and California but they look forward to the adventure of glorifying God in Costa Rica.
Joe's a big fan of his children, the movies, Peruvian food and good books. He currently oversees our Sunday School and Small Groups programs along with providing guidance to ministry leaders at IBC.
Jilma Schecher Administrative Assistant
Jilma was born in Managua, Nicaragua. At the age of 3, she moved to CR with her mother and grandparents. Raised in a hard working family of strong faith, Jilma attended a Christian school and became bilingual at a young age. Growing up, she always wanted to be a psychologist and a teacher, both of which she pursued and achieved.
Jilma obtained a Bachelors Degree in Bilingual Preschool Education from Universidad Latina. While she earned her Bachelor’s degree and eventually a Masters Degree, she taught at different private schools. After 10 years of teaching, she went back to school, UNIBE, where she obtained her degree in Psychology and is now a licensed psychologist.
In 2005, Jilma began working part time at International Baptist Church helping in the office and worked her way into a full time position as the church’s administrative assistant in 2010. Jilma met her husband Gene in 2012 and they married in January 2015. They are both active members of the church where they serve in different ministries.
Gustavo Ugarte Worship Leader
Gustavo was born in San Ramón de Alajuela, Costa Rica. He has lived in many different places like Golfito, Limón, Desamparados, New Jersey, and Santa Ana. He currently lives in Atenas with his family, Ariana and Sebastián. At the age of 19 he accepted the Lord Jesus as his Saviour and started attending a local Baptist Church in Desamparados. A few years later he graduated from the Baptist Bible Institute in San Sebastián, Costa Rica with a BA in Christian Education. He works for a bank full time and for the church part time. He also studied both accounting and economics.
In 2007 he started attending IBC and helping with the music ministry playing the piano and singing. He also helped with the church´s accounting. A few years later he became one of the regular worship leaders at church. His music abilities are natural and inherited from his grandfather (Mom´s side) and also his father side. It wasn't until he was 22 years old that he started to play the keyboard and sing. Gustavo has an album in Spanish called “Vengo a Adorarte” with a variety of songs. His song “For Your Saving Love” is featured in the IBC Worship CD called “Many Places Many Faces” and was in the top 10 songs for the Praisecharts.com 2013 Christian Song Competition. He has composed several songs throughout the years and some of them are used in IBC as well as in other churches.
Gustavo’s been able to serve the Lord with his music ministry in churches in places such as New Jersey, Virginia, New York, Perú, Venezuela, Switzerland, Germany and of course Costa Rica where he serves as Worship Leader in IBC since June 2014. He´s grateful to serve in this local church and appreciates the diversity of cultures this church offers as well as the leadership of the pastors. He´s thankful for all the volunteers who serve together with him in leading the congregation in worship every Sunday and also for the unity of the church.
