All of us could use an awakening of our soul every once in a while. What does it take to have a soul fully awakened? We can find the answer in the ancient book of worship called PSALMS. As we begin a new year we will examine selected Psalms that will recharge and awaken the soul.
Jesus has given all of his followers a mission. Our mission is to go to all the world proclaiming the gospel to others through our words and actions. We are empowered by the Holy Spirit to accomplish this mission together. As we focus on missions during the month of February, we want to focus on the mission that God has given each one of us.
There is a lot that divides people today. We are divided by race, language, culture, economics and politics, just to name a few. We look around us and see a fragmented and divided society. Is there anything that can unite us in our day? The Apostle Paul would answer with a resounding "Yes!" In his letter to the Ephesians he says that just as God is united with his son and the Holy Spirit, Christians can be united with one another. Jesus has torn down the barriers that so easily divide us. He's given his church a message of reconciliation to all people. When we respond to God's free gift of grace, then we all can experience the unity that comes from knowing Christ.
Did you know that money is mentioned in the Bible over 800 times? Were you aware that 11 of the 39 parables that Jesus used focused on money? If money is mentioned so often in the scripture, it is safe to conclude that we as Christians have an obligation to handle our finances wisely.
Unfortunately, many Christians do not even know what God says about finances and they certainly are not handling their finances wisely. How should we respond when everything around us seems to be in chaos? Could it be that a desperate situation might be an opportunity to grow closer to God? The prophet Joel lived during a very chaotic time for God’s people. Their lives and livelihood were in danger because of a plague of locusts. Yet Joel saw this as an opportunity for his fellow Israelites to “return to the Lord your God for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love.” Let’s learn from this minor prophet how we can experience hope in desperate times.
Undaunted means "courageously resolute especially in the face of danger or difficulty". "Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem." -Luke 9:51 In Luke's account of the life and ministry of Jesus, we see Jesus make a valiant decision to head to Jerusalem even though he knew opposition, persecution, and ultimately death awaited him there. His mission was clear and his courage was undaunted. Along the way a lot happens. Opposition against him grew. The spiritual battle got even stronger. Yet Jesus' commitment to get to Jerusalem and to minister as he went remained unchanged. We can have same type of undaunted courage as we study this important section from Luke's gospel.
